Featured PhD Projects

Synthesis and Characterization of Conjugated Oligoelectrolytes for Bio-imaging Applications

Supervisor: Prof Guillermo Bazan

This project focuses on the design and synthesis of novel conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs) for advanced bio-imaging applications. COEs offer significant potential as molecular platforms for single-molecule detection techniques, such as fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), which could identify biomarkers linked to ageing and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Synthesis of Novel Conjugated Oligoelectrolytes for Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance

Supervisor: Prof Guillermo Bazan

This project addresses the global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by developing novel COEs that disrupt bacterial membranes, offering a fresh approach to antibiotic development. COEs are uniquely positioned to provide new lead compounds for treating difficult infections, including non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

Information and Decision Theory in Biosensing and Diagnostics

Supervisor: Asst Prof Matthew Foreman

This project takes an innovative approach to biosensing by analysing optical assays from an information theory standpoint. Using decision theory and computational imaging techniques, this research will develop diagnostic tools with enhanced sensitivity for real-time detection of pathogens and disease biomarkers.
